|Artist or Collection Biography:||Deborah Rhodes grew up in the Deep South where she was taught from an early age to set a beautiful table. There is a great sense of pride and American tradition there, which is deeply rooted in all she creates. However, early on in life, she made a move towards something much bigger. A successful modeling career in LA is what gave her the realization that she wanted to not just wear, but create trends. She moved to New York where she and her husband, Paul, ran a 10,000 square foot studio and workshop in the heart of New York City’s garment district creating some of the most sought-after fashion accessories of the 80’s and 90’s. As exciting as this was, the fashion world presented a major trial for Deborah. The demanding industry's requirement of her to design and produce five collections each year caused her to feel she was losing her ability to creatively express herself. A new opportunity opened up when a valued customer, boutique department store Henri Bendel, approached her to make placemats. To these new products, she naturally applied her tried and true millinery techniques to conjure up what is now known as her signature “Original Braided Round Placemat”. Her first mats were even made on hat machines.|
